APPY BIRTHDAY TO MY FRIENDS DANA AND JOHN!
It was very nice to see Dana again this year when she came to visit Seattle. And though I haven't
heard from John in a while, I hope he's well. Happy birthday to them both (since they're
twins)!

"thunder + snow" | thursday | december 18, 2008 | 6:26 am
WAS WOKEN UP THIS MORNING at 5:30 AM BY THUNDER.
There were a couple of really good, long belly rumbles. I got up to go to the bathroom and
saw out the window that it was snowing really, really hard. It was serious snow -- especially
for Seattle! So, even though I was still tired and sleepy, I had to go outside into the snow
and take some pictures. Plus, being in the quiet, in the snow, everything blanketed in white,
and the snow falling out of the sky is one of my favorite things in the world.

Here's a little video of the snowy goodness (it's still early morning and at this time of year in
Seattle, it's dark as heck):
Here are some more pictures from a little later in the morning. It's brighter, the snow is lighter,
the roads haven't been cleared yet, and people are braving the weather.

Here's some more video (this is about 10 AM):
What a winter wonderland! Happy holidays! More soon!

APPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SISTER, ALENDA!
I hope you have a great birthday! Hopefully, we'll get a chance to celebrate when I go visit
San Francisco later this week (that is if the snow doesn't keep me Seattle bound). Happy birthday!
Happy solstice! Best wishes! Lots of love!

"snowed in" | monday | december 22, 2008 | 9:22 am
OR THE THIRD DAY IN A ROW, IT SNOWED YESTERDAY.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, into Monday. What started out as a winter wonderland I think is starting
to get on Seattle's nerves. The city is just underprepared for this kind of weather, this
kind of accumulation. Now, compared to other parts of the country that is used to snow,
Seattle gets slammed even if it's only a few inches. Not enough plows. Not enough workers.
Too many hills. I mean just walking around my neighborhood (which sits atop one of Seattle's
big hills), there are a lot of businesses that are closed because of the weather. The
Seattle metro buses are running at half with many routes simply cancelled. The airport is
cancelling flights left and right.
Here are some pictures I took with my phone on Saturday afternoon (note that it's practically
dark out already) around
Green Lake,
which is normally, well, green. With the snow, with it partially frozen around the edges, the
lake looks like some misty New England or Alaskan shore. It was very pretty, very mysterious,
and very cold.
Here are some pictures from later that night. Greg and I managed to get from his place in
Green Lake back to Capitol Hill (and up some big, scary, snowy, icy hills mind you). Then
what better time to go out to the bars than on snowed-in nights? We trudged down to the
Purr and later to the
Elite and then
discovered that my favorite, favorite, favorite bar just re-opened that night, the
Bus Stop! Nearby, we came
upon a crowd of people who were sledding down Denny Way in the middle of the night.
So, Greg and I asked if we could borrow a sled and we mounted said sled and took to
the slopes!
There was more snow on Sunday. It certainly looks like it'll be a "white Christmas" this year.
In Seattle, about five to nine inches have fallen. Sunday afternoon, I measured the snow piled
up on the unmmoved cars outside of my apartment and got eight inches! The city is pretty darn
quiet, and I'm not sure it's going to "recover" any time soon. Greg and I had planned a trip
to visit my sister and the Bay Area this coming weekend. I'm not sure we'll be able to get out
of here, particularly with the airlines scrambling to get what limited flights they can off
the runway. Ah well. Here are some pictures I took with my digital camera from yesterday
afternoon (again, it's only like five o'clock and it looks like the dead of night).

"the snow made me drink" | tuesday | december 23, 2008 | 11:01 am
ERE ARE SOME PICTURES FROM THE WEEKEND IN THE SNOW.
What better way to celebrate the snow than to go out on the town? What better way to get over
cabin fever than having a few cocktails? Here are pictures from that fateful Saturday night,
which involved the Purr, the Elite, the Bus Stop, and sledding down city streets. It was a fun
night. A great urban adventure.
Pictures from the Elite. Dramatis personae include myself, Greg, Kevin, Danny, and some guy
who was really drunk, not out of the closet, yet wanted to hang out in a gay bar whilst his
father was across the street drinking in an Irish bar.
Pictures from the brand new Bus Stop. Characters include me, still, Greg, Danny, Kevin went home,
Rodney the bartender, and Suzannah.

ERE ARE SOME PICTURES FROM MY TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO WITH GREG.
The weather was really good. Our flight was only a little delayed heading down. The hotel is always really
nice and sweet. And the City -- The City -- feels like home whenever I go back there. I had a good time.
I was really happy to see my sister Alenda and her partner Brian. It was nice to catch up with some
friends. And it was really good to spend some quality time with Greg. I even managed to sneak in a day
at the Modern Language Association conference to see my sister give a paper. Then it was back to Seattle.
Too bad I'm sick now.
Pictures from Berkeley, a short hike up a giant Brekeley hill my sister took Greg and I on, and the
holiday feast we cooked that night:

Our brisk morning visit the California Academy of Science.
Recently remodeled and updated, the Academy was very nice, limited in scope, and frantically popular with
the post-Christmas family crowd. There were so many people in line just to get in before doors even opened.
But we made it in, saw most of the exhibits, and then escaped for lunch elsewhere.

Lunch in the mission at Taqueria Cancun. Super burrito, please. Delicioso!

Post-lunch trek across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin to Tiburon.
Pictures from the hotel and the city:
