"Firstsummer"
Arrived are we in June beloved by sun
and nourished earth, whose gifts slow come to bear,
a season born for childrens' play and run
of grunyon 'long the coast white-foamed and fair.
Tis now the land's sure most generous days,
the air is gilt with humid rose and thyme,
where every drop of rain yields green and maize,
and limb and lamb and gull-winged love do climb.
But ne'er shall we forget the light and heat
may dry and wilt with equal ease to thrive
for high the sun upon its solstice seat
casts rays to aid the sight or blind the eyes.
As we make our feasts on this longest day
to remember our darkest nights we pray.
